Linux on the Dell Inspiron 5000e

Introduction

The first thing you should know, and this is very important, is that the 5000e is not the same machine as the Inspiron 5000! The most important difference is that the 5000e uses a different video controller chip.

I first wrote this page when Red Hat 7.0 first came out. At that point, getting X working was difficult. Now, everything works just fine straight out of the box.

APM Crashes - Updated 3/21/01

The A04 bios causes apmd to crash during boot, and causes apm to crash if you run it.

The A05 BIOS, released on 3/9/01, fixes these problems.
